Tens of thousands of people protested on Saturday in the streets of the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur against the rising living costs and lack of reforms by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Demonstrators demand his resignation, TASR writes based on AFP and Reuters reports.
The demonstrations were summoned by opposition parties and since the arrival of Anwara in 2022 This is the first larger anti -government protests. Thousands of people gathered in various places in the center of Kuala Lumpur before they marched to a square of independence (Merdeka). The protesters were dressed in black T -shirts and carried banners with the slogan “Drive Anwar”.
“It’s been three years. What did the people get? I think he enjoys (Anwar) when he sees us to suffer,” During the protest, the former Prime Minister, collaborator and current Anwar Rival Mahathir Mohamad declared. “Suffice it, please withdraw,” added. The police and representatives of Kuala Lumpur estimate that 18 to 50,000 people have participated in the protests.
Anwar led a political campaign on reform promises. He argued that he would fight corruption, protectionism and clientelism in the fragmented political system of Malaysia. According to the protesters, the Prime Minister has not fulfilled his promises and, moreover, faces allegations of people about alleged interference in the independence of the judiciary.
