Without warning, Venezuela began to comply with an economic supplement agreement signed in 2014 that exempts tax collection on almost all bilateral trade between the two countries.

There is no information on the reasons for the tax collection, which was not officially communicated to the Brazilian government.

According to FIER (Federation of Industries of the State of Roraima), exporters of Brazil are not having their certificates of Brazilian origin recognized in Venezuela, which makes the agreement that exempts tariff products not applied in practice.

The state of Roraima is the most affected by the surcharge, as it borders and has its largest commercial partner in the neighboring country.

“The International Business Center of the Federation of Industries of the State of Roraima informs that it has already started internal findings to identify the difficulties regarding the acceptance of certificates of origin of Brazilian products by the Venezuelan authorities,” the federation said in a statement.

FIER also stated that it is in contact with authorities from Brazil and Venezuela “in search of clarifications and rapid solutions aimed at the normalization of bilateral trade flow.”

Sought, the MDIC (Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not respond to the request for comment until the publication of this text.
