If you have had a dog in life, the chances are great that it has been called in a way… familiar.

This is because, as with baby names that come in and out, pets also follow certain trends. And in Brazil, some names resist the time and cross generations of tutors, always present in squares, pet shops and veterinarians.

Classic dog names have one thing in common: they are short, easy to call and somehow seem to match perfectly with any race, size or personality. Many of them come from pop culture, others have been born from popular tradition, and some simply became irresistible over the years.

According to data compiled by pet shops, veterinary clinics and platforms such as Rover (specializing in animal behavior), there are names that never come out of the top of the most used list.

6 dog names that are classic and you have probably had a

1. Rex

Rex may be the most famous of all. It is almost impossible to grow in Brazil without knowing a dog called that.

The name has Latin origin and means “king”, which explains the popularity between the owners who see their pets as true sovereigns of the house.

2. Toby

Toby is another unbeatable classic.

Popularized in movies and drawings, such as “Toby, The Friend Dog”, the name has a light and friendly sound, which suits docile and companions dogs.

3. Bob

Bob may seem simple, but it is one of the most commonly used names in the country.

It emerged as a spuply version of names like Bobby or Rob, but turned out to be a national darling.

4. Princesa

Princess, in turn, is one of those names that are present especially among small females.

It is common in homes that treat their little dogs as true checkers, with the head and pillow on the couch.

5. Neguinha

Neguinha also appears among the most common names, especially for black dogs, of any race.

It is a loving and popular way to nickname those dogs that conquer for sweetness and loyalty.

6. Thor

And finally, Thor.

Although it seems more recent, the name has already been consolidated as classic, thanks to the success of Marvel’s superhero. Many tutors like the idea of having a strong and protective dog with a powerful name.
