Brazilian senators had a first working meeting on Saturday since Saturday in Washington, United States, as part of the official mission to the US capital to discuss 50% tariffs to Brazilian products, starting on August 1. The meeting was prepared and focused on updating parliamentarians on priority topics and aligning the points that should be discussed at meetings with US congressmen and representatives of the US productive sector.
“The objective was to promote an update of the theme and align the points we should address throughout the mission. This preparation is fundamental to ensure a cohesive, institutional and strategic performance on behalf of Brazil,” said Senator Nelsinho Trad (PSD-MS), president of the Foreign Relations Commission and coordinator of the Mission, in a statement.
Senators Carlos Viana (Somos-MG), Jacques Wagner (PT-BA) and Rogério Carvalho (PT-SE) should arrive in Washington this Sunday.
The Brazilian Senate’s official mission to the American capital takes place amid the beginning of parliamentary recess in the US. The House of Representatives recessed last week, while the American Senate should have a session by July 31.
With the emptied parliamentary agenda, the focus of the Brazilian mission should be the corporate sector. Brazil’s attempts at negotiations with the US have gained body in recent days, but no advancement has actually occurred amid the fear that Americans adopt new sanctions against the country.

US President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order in the coming days with legal justifications to tax imported products from Brazil by 50%, from August, as reported by the press. This is because the investigation by the US Trade Representation Office (USTR) to investigate unfair business practices in Brazil, which would also have the same goal, could consume more time.
Last week, American senators sent a letter to President Trump, criticizing the taxation to Brazil. In the document, they accuse the White House head of “clear abuse of power” and that interferes with the legal system of a sovereign nation creates a “dangerous precedent” and causes a “unnecessary trade war”.
