Tapada Grande’s river beach, located less than three kilometers from the village of Mértola, has been elected the best in Europe in the “Inland Beaches” category in the World Travel Awards. With calm water that reaches the 30 degrees in the hottest months, this Alentejo corner continues to go unnoticed to many Portuguese, despite adding seven consecutive years among the best classified river destinations in Europe.
Locally known as Mina de São Domingos Beach, Tapada Grande is inserted in an old miner complex and is fueled by a Senior Water Shoes, watched and certified with blue flag and the gold quality seal. The natural surroundings and the historical legacy make this space a singular destination in the interior of the country.
River beach with tropical temperatures
According to the organizers, environmental quality, support services and landscape frames were decisive for the distinction. The site has a bathing area with surveillance, shadow spaces, resorts and restoration zone, making it particularly attractive to families.

Two steps from Mértola
Tapada Grande is about two and a half hours from Lisbon and two hours from Faro. According to Visit Alentejo, road accessibility is simple, with direct connections from the main cities of the south. The proximity of the village of Mértola also allows to combine beach and cultural visit, in a territory that preserves medieval traits, Islamic influence and a relevant archaeological heritage.
The former Vila Mineira de São Domingos, today disabled, serves as a point of entry to this scenario where nature and industrial memory intersect. The beach itself is surrounded by rails and interpretative structures that invite the exploration of the surrounding territory.
