The Military Police of the banned the Three Powers Square at dawn on Saturday (26), after the decision of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Court (STF), who prohibited camps at the scene.
With this, tourists were prevented from walking around the square – although the entry into nearby buildings, such as Congress, was released for visitation. The measure was taken after a group of Bolsonarist deputies, led by Helio Lopes (PL-RJ), start a demonstration in front of the Court in protest against decisions involving former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
On Friday night (25), Moraes determined, at the request of the Attorney General’s Office, the subpoena of the Governor of the Federal District, (), immediately removing the parliamentarians from the square. The governor himself went to the scene to ensure compliance with the order.
According to Moraes, the square “is a security area and will not be allowed that supporters of several defendants, who are being prosecuted and will be tried in the second half of this year by the Supreme Court, organize new illegal camps to coerce the ministers of our Supreme Court in an attempt to obstruct justice.”
The STF minister remembers the acts of January 8 saying that, in the episode, Brazilian democracy was severely attacked with an attempt to blow, “having one of the main factors the omission of several authorities.” “The democratic rule of law is not negotiated and it is not reasonable to repeat the unfortunate previous error of allowing the organization of criminals scammer camps,” Moraes wrote in his decision.
The minister also compared the leniency with the previous camps in front of the Army Quartels to the attempt to negotiate with Nazism. For him, the behavior of the Brazilian authorities in the episode was “a repetition of the ignoble policy of appeasement, whose failure was widely shown in the attempt to agree by then English Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain with the Nazism of Adolf Hitler.”

In addition to Helio Lopes, the decision cited Deputies Sostenes Cavalcante (PL-RJ), Cabo Gilberto Silva (PL-PB), Colonel Chrisóstomo (PL-RO) and Rodrigo da Zaeli (PL-MT). Some of them claim not to be in. On social network, Chrisóstomo stated: “Dictatorship, we live in a dictatorship in Brazil”. Lopes stated that he will continue to resist “even with silence.”
Moraes also determined the prohibition of new camps within a ray of a kilometer from the Three Powers Square, Esplanade of Ministries and Armed Forces barracks. The orders were issued under the fake news inquiry and aim to avoid new acts similar to the scammer attacks of January 8, 2023.
The STF Judicial Police Department and the Federal District Public Security Bureau have not set a deadline for the reopening of the Three Powers Square. They evaluate the possibility of improvising a unique area for entry and exit of the site, monitored by the Military Police, as was done in previous cases.
The concern is to ensure safety and allow access of people interested in visiting public spaces located inside the square, such as the Pantheon of the Fatherland and the Tea House.
A 2006 decree of the Federal District Government regulates what it can and cannot in manifestations in Brasilia. The text prohibits the installation of camps in the central area of the city.
“The use of public areas of the Esplanade of Ministries, the Praça dos Três Powers and the Monumental and Road axes is prohibited to any extent, for any type of camp,” says the decree.
