SAO PAULO, SP (Folhapress)-The United States and the European Union announced on Sunday (27) a trade agreement that imposes 15% tariffs on most of the bloc products, the same rate as the agreement that President Donald Trump closed with Japan on Tuesday (22).

According to the US president, the EU has agreed to buy $ 750 billion from the energy sector, will invest in the United States $ 600 billion more than current investment, buy military equipment and open countries to trade with zero fare. He also stated that a 15% tariff was agreed on cars and all other products.

The understanding was closed during a meeting between Trump and the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, at her golf resort in Turnberry, Scotland.

The 15% basic tariff will be seen by many in Europe as a result below expectations compared to the initial European ambition of a zero fare agreement for both parties – although it is even better than the 30% tariff that had been threatened.

Trump criticizes the European Union often, stating that it was “formed to screw the United States” in commerce. Its main complaint is the American commercial deficit in goods with the EU, which in 2024 reached $ 235 billion ($ 1.3 trillion). The EU, in turn, highlights the American surplus in services, which, according to the block, helps partially balance the balance.

Trump has already managed to close agreements with the United Kingdom, Japan, Indonesia and Vietnam – although his government has not yet fulfilled the promise of “90 agreements in 90 days.”

The US president announced the deal with Japan on Tuesday night (22) on the Truth Social platform. The hit represented a reduction in relation to the 24% announced in April, but an increase compared to the temporary rate of 10%.

In return, the US President said the Asian country will open their markets for US cars and rice and invest $ 500 billion in the country to create “hundreds of thousands of jobs.”

“We just finished a huge deal with Japan, perhaps the biggest ever done,” he wrote. “Japan will open its country for commerce, including cars and trucks, rice and certain agricultural products and other things.”

The agreement was accompanied on the same day as Indonesia and the Philippines, who were able to reduce the imposed rates on their exports in exchange for a reduction in imported American products rates.

In an agreement signed last week, but detailed on Tuesday (22), Indonesia agreed to eliminate tariffs on more than 99% of US products and abolish all non-tariff barriers, according to a statement released by the two countries.

The US will reduce tariffs on Southeast Asian economy from 32% to 19%. The rate is equal to the announced for the Philippines also on Tuesday, which promised to zero the rates on American products, according to Trump Social Publication. The rate for Vietnam was fixed by 20%.

Countries affected by reciprocal tariffs run to agree with the US government before August 1, when higher rates should come into force. The Brazilian government, the target of 50%surcharge, studies several measures to face Trump’s tariff.

Less than a week from the end of the time to the US government to apply 50% surcharge over products imported from Brazil, formal negotiation channels between the Brazilian and the American government are closed.
