Forgive the car keys overnight in the hallway can be the beginning of a big problem. Modern thieves do not need rough power, because they only need a signal that your key gives. And that’s why some people put them… in a microwave.
It may sound like a joke or a strange tip from social networks, but keeping car keys overnight is a practice that the President of the British Automotive Association Edmund King also resorted. However, it was not a recession: his family car was stolen directly from the driveway and King decided to respond. In addition to a special housing blocking signal, the so -called Faraday envelope, it stores the keys in the metal box, which eventually closes in the microwave. What leads him?
How it all works
Most modern cars today use contactless unlocking and starting today. But this comfort also has its other side. The thieves use the so -called “Relay Attack”. Using two devices, it captures and extends the signal from the key wherever it is at home. One thief moves at your house, the other at the car, transfers the signal with each other, unlock the car, starts and is gone.
Faraday’s cases, which can be purchased for a few crowns, act as mini cages that block radio waves. But they are not 100 % either. And here comes the microwave. Its construction is made of metal, which prevents microwave leakage during food heating, as well as blocking external electromagnetic signals. So when you store the keys to Faraday’s case and then in the microwave, you create a double barrier.
Although Combination of microwave and case reduces the risk of successful signal capture Virtually zero, experts warn against one major danger. Forgotten. If someone in the family turns on a microwave with the keys inside, there may be serious damage to the electronics of the key, spark or even a fire. So the microwave is not a safe. It is an appliance that is not designed to keep any electronics.
Better than nothing but with reason
Professional blocking boxes and cases are designed for this purpose: they safely block the signal and do not pose a risk of fire or damage to the electronics. However, if you still want to store the keys in the microwave, make sure the appliance is connected, marked or inform the entire household about your gadget. Even little inattention can cost you thousands of crowns.

Security of the car is no longer just about. Today’s reality requires technological thinking. Safely storage of the key is the foundation. It is not a paranoia, but a prevention: just a few seconds and the car can be gone. Microwave can function as a backup solution but should not be your only security measure. The right technology, a little discipline and awareness are the best key. To your car and quiet sleep.
