Appearance of marine animals on the coast of the state is common this time of year; migration happens in search of food or for reproduction
An elephant puppy was caught at Piratininga Beach in Niterói, in the metropolitan region of, on Saturday (28). The animal, which weighs between three and four tons and measures approximately five meters, rested quietly on the stones, to the surprise of the bathers in the place. The appearance of sea animals on the coast of Rio is common this time of year. Coming from Patagonia, in the south of the continent, they migrate in search of food or to reproduction. Penguins, whales, sea lions and otters are some of the species that are usually spotted on the coast of Rio de Janeiro.
Despite the rarity of the visit of an elephant marine, the animal was already being monitored by a non-governmental organization (NGO) specializing in marine life, since its arrival on the state coast. The Fire Department, A, the Marítimo Group (GMAR) and the Niterói Municipal Guard were fired and isolated an area of 40 meters around the animal to ensure their safety and that of the population.
The authorities’ orientation was that people would not approach the elephant-marine, as he could feel threatened. In case of sighting of marine animals, the recommendation is to contact the competent bodies so that the appropriate measures are taken.
