Less than a week of the 50% rates entry into force on Brazilian products announced by President Donald Trump, the United States government has not yet responded to Chancellor Mauro Vieira’s request for a bilateral meeting.
The Foreign Minister is in New York for a UN meeting and seeks to make a direct diplomatic channel with Washington possible before the implementation of the measure, scheduled for August 1.
According to CNN Brazilso far there has been no official signs of the US government for a meeting. The absence of response is concerned with Itamaraty, which consider the fundamental diplomatic dialogue in the face of the escalation of commercial tension between countries.

“Sovereignty is non -negotiable”
Despite the willingness to negotiate, the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) has reiterated that he will not accept any kind of political interference in commercial negotiations.
“Brazil continues and will continue to negotiate with the United States, but national sovereignty and the Democratic Rule of Law are non -negotiable,” said the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, in a statement released on Sunday (27).
The folder, led by Vice President Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), also stressed that dialogue with the US will be conducted based on technical principles and without “political or ideological contamination.”

“Brazil and the United States have maintained a robust and high -level economic relationship for over 200 years. The Brazilian government expects to preserve and strengthen this historical partnership, ensuring that it continues to reflect the depth and importance of our ties.”
For the Brazilian government, the US decision represents an attack on the country’s sovereignty and its internal policy, and is not supported by technical or commercial criteria.
The Brazilian response has been articulated on different fronts: diplomatic, institutional and legal, with the government even evaluating resort to the WTO (World Trade Organization), if the political dialogue does not prosper.
