Tourists who decide to travel to the Greek island of Corfú must be careful with unforeseen telephone rates so as not to wear an unpleasant surprise. This beach destination is popular among British travelers, especially in summer. However, many have complained about an unforeseen charge.
Corfú is located a few kilometers from the Albanian coast, a closeness that is causing a wave of complaints by tourists from the United Kingdom, who have received unexpected charges of up to 300 euros in their mobile phone bills, as reported by the media .
Upon arrival, tourists receive a text message with the message “Welcome to Albania”. Although Corfú is a Greek island, mobile phones are automatically connected to the Albanian network due to its proximity to this country, where rates are higher.
“I arrived on Sunday and received the usual welcome message saying that the rates in Corfú are the same as in the United Kingdom,” wrote a British tourist on Facebook, according to the media . Two days later, however, he came a message that said: “Welcome to Albania, here are your rates.”
“Wow, what scam! I called the company. After 45 minutes of conversation, they told me that the network should have changed to another antenna. You have to be careful, if not, a money will cost you,” added the tourist in the social network.
According to the British media, another tourist had to pay 128 pounds (146 euros) for using Google Maps during a quad walk. Another reported an unexpected invoice of 298 pounds (340 euros). Therefore, they recommend travelers deactivate automatic roaming or manually select a Greek network to avoid these charges.
