Since the beginning of this year, the Constitutional Court (ÚS) of the Slovak Republic was to be gradually visited by the Ambassadors of the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and France. This was announced on Tuesday by Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD). He claims that they discussed an amendment to the Act on NGOs, which was discussed at that time by Parliament, as well as a change in the Constitution of the Slovak Republic. The Constitutional Court objected to Fico’s claims, considers them false and unsubstantiated. He described them as a gross and unacceptable intervention in the impartiality and independence of the judiciary. ÚS referred that he would not tolerate the manifestations of discreditation of its activities.

“We know that they were pushing into the Constitutional Court, that it should in any case be declared unconstitutional. Fico said at a Tuesday press conference, saying that the US could not assess the compliance of the amendment to the Constitution with the Constitution itself. “What does the ambassador of another country do to the Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic?” Fico asked, who do not believe the claims that the discussions concerned the competences and status of the court.

“The Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic is strongly opposed to Prime Minister Robert Fico’s statements to the Constitutional Court, concerning the Communication of the Constitutional Court with Ambassadors on the Act on NGOs and the change of the Constitution of the Slovak Republic,” stated in the opinion of the ÚS spokeswoman Martina Ferencová. “In the past, the Constitutional Court has stated that it does not communicate on matters that are subject to proceedings before the Constitutional Court outside the legal procedural procedures with anyone,” she stressed.

The Constitutional Court declares that as an independent judicial authority of the protection of constitutionality acts in accordance with the Constitution, the Constitutional Court Act and the procedural rules, ‘which exclude any external impact on its decision -making activities, and therefore will not tolerate any manifestations of discrediting its activities. ” aware and fully respects the use of diverse means of communication in all areas of social life, “But it is distanced from being drawn into a political fight through communication with the public.”
