The Vice President of the Republic and Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, said on Monday (28) that Brazil is using institutional channels and also “in reserve” to dialogue with the new fare imposed by the president. The US measure, announced on July 9, will take effect next Friday (1) and foresees the taxation of 50% over all Brazilian products bought by the United States.

Alckmin has told reporters that the Brazilian government is committed to reversing the decision and that a contingency plan is being prepared. “It is a very complete and well done plan. But all commitment now this week is to seek to solve the problem. We are permanently in dialogue, we are dialoguing at this time, by institutional channels and in reserve,” said the vice president.

By determination of the president, an interministerial committee was created to discuss the impacts of the measure and formulate strategies. The working group is coordinated by Alckmin and has kept conversations with entrepreneurs and representatives of the sectors most affected by Trump’s decision.

Despite the severity of the situation, the vice president stated that there is no forecast of direct conversation with the US President. “I didn’t talk to President Lula about it [eventual diálogo direto com Trump]but President Lula is a man of dialogue. It has always defended dialogue, which is what we do permanently, ”concluded Alckmin.
