Angolan taxi drivers demarcate vandalism and cancel strike

The National Association of Angola Taxi drivers (Anata) demarcated this Monday from acts of vandalism practiced by “Opportunists” Against innocent people, public and private goods, as part of the taxi drivers’ stoppage in Luanda, and announced the suspension of the strike.

Anata, in a statement, states that acts of vandalism, looting warehouses and institutions, riding, barricades and damage of public and private vehicles were practiced by opportunists not associated with the organization.

According to the Association of Taxi drivers, the peaceful, orderly, serene and silent stoppage, scheduled between July 28 and 30, with motto “Stay at home”was summoned more than 20 days ago by the platforms of taxi drivers and cooperatives That, after the dialogue kept with the governor of Luanda, was canceled.

The Angolan capital recorded episodes of violence, withdrawals and barricades in the early hours of Monday, following the strike called by taxi drivers against the rise of fuel and taxi tariff, fact that motivated the intervention of the Angolan police with various means of dissuasion to lock the protests.

There were reports of injured and killedaccording to images shared on social networks, not yet confirmed by the police authorities, with the police indicated only the arrest of a hundred people.

“To prevent individuals foreign to the class and profiteers, for inconfessions, continue to disturb social peace,” Anata and other associations and cooperatives reiterate that the previously announced stoppage has been canceled.

They appeal to taxi drivers to continue performing their work with normality and stress that Tuesday will be a normal working day, increasing that the return to activity is done with serenity, urbanity and discipline.

They also ensure opening to dialogue with the authorities to improve taxi activity conditions.
