The preparation of João Fonseca, 18, for the US Open dispute began with a stumble on Monday (28). The Brazilian was eliminated at the premiere of the Masters 1000 of Toronto, surpassed by Australian Tristan Schoolkate, 24, 103rd from the ATP ranking.

Number 1 of Brazil and 49th of ATP, Fonseca suffered mainly from the withdrawals of the opponent and lost by 2 sets to 0, partial 7/6 (7-5) and 6/4, in 1h31 starting. Schoolkate had never defeated a Top 50 player in his career.

“I am very happy with the result. I played well and left the match dangerous to João. He is very young, but is already stabilized in the circuit,” said the Australian.

The dispute marked Fonseca’s sixth participation in Masters 1000 level tournaments, the most important after the Grand Slams.

His best campaign in competitions of this level was in Miami in March, when he lost to Alex de Minaur in the third round.

The Brazilian had not been on a court for three weeks since the fall in the third round of Wimbledon, when he lost to Chilean Nicolás Jarry.

Fonseca’s next appointment will be Cincinnati’s Masters 1000 from August 5 in the United States. Following, he disputes the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the season, between August 24 and September 7.
