Members of Brazilian diplomacy state that a connection between Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and Donald Trump depends on a White House signaling about a conversation that strictly addresses trade relations.
With the approach of the tariff, the possibility of contact between the two presidents, previously seen as unlikely, became a theme among government members.
According to Itamaraty sources, there is initially backstage work to find out if the US government in a possible contact wants to negotiate the tariff or “if they will insist on the non -negotiable requirement” – reference to the mention of the judicial process against Jair Bolsonaro (PL) on the tariff announcement letter.
The government’s interlocutors also considered that even if the contact between both heads of state is confirmed, it would require a time of preparation and planning.
