Black currant jam has a distinct taste, which is why the berry or blueberry beats on the head. As long as the season for these fruits lasts, we recommend closing them in a jar to enjoy their intense aroma and acidic taste in winter, perfectly matching sweet dishes. It is worth using grandma’s tricks and add apples and oranges.
Usually, you need to use compacting for jam and jam so that the preparations have the right consistency. For this purpose, gelling sugar or food pectin is used. Many people do not want to use such products and think about their proportions.
Fortunately, blackcurrant jam from grandma’s recipe does not require any thickeners, because it has naturally occurring pectins. Grandma has always added fruit to him, i.e. apples and oranges, which also show gelling properties. Thanks to this fruit addition, the preserves will come out thick, but also incredibly tasty.

Ingredients:
- 2 kg of blackcurrant;
- 1.5 kg of acidic apples (preferably paper);
- 500 g of cane sugar;
- 3 orange juice;
- 1 lemon juice.
Preparation:
At the beginning, wash and dry the currants, then pour them into the pot and cover them with half the sugar. Set aside for 3 hours so that the fruit releases the juice.
After this time, we start frying currants on low heat for about 30 minutes, stirring every now and then. Then we cook the fruit for the next 2 days – 30-40 minutes a day. The longer the processing lasts, the thicker the jam and evaporates more and more.
In the next step, peel apples and cut out the seed nests from them. In turn, cut the pulp into pieces and throw it into the pot. We also add lemon juice and add the rest of the sugar. Cook the whole until the fruit breaks out.
The resulting apple mousse is poured into a pot with currants and pour orange juice. We heat the jam for several minutes. If necessary, it can be sweetened.
Transfer hot blackcurrant jam into scalded, clean jars and tighten them firmly. Then we wrap the dishes with a cloth or towel. When they completely cool, we transfer the preparations to the pantry.
We can lubricate the blackcurrant with blackcurrant with apples and oranges but also other fried and baked pies. It also tastes great on fresh bread with butter.
It is worth adding this home process to ice cream and desserts in cups. It also matches porridge, yogurt or semolina.
Black currant jam can be served with a cheese board with nuts. We recommend giving it to the grilled camembert, Halloumi or oscypek.
