An important Palestinian activist who had worked on an Oscar-winning documentary died on Monday after being shot by a Jewish settler in Israel-occupied West Bank, according to local journalists and authorities.
Odeh Hathalin, “No other Land” consultant, a film that documents attacks by Israeli and military settlers to the community of Masafer Yatta, West Bank, was shot in the village of Umm Al-Khair in the same community.
Israeli police reported that officers arrived at the scene and detained an Israeli civilian, who was later arrested for interrogation. The arrested man was not identified.
The army of Israel claimed that “terrorists have shot stones at civilians near Carmel,” an Israeli settlement near Umm Al-Khair.
Hathalin shots were first reported by Yuval Abraham, Israeli’s investigative journalist who codirigious “No Ory Land”, who won the Oscar for best documentary in the 2025 edition.
Abraham reported that the consultant was “shot at the top of the body” and was in critical condition.
Subsequently, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that he had died as a result of the injuries.
Many settlers are armed, and violence in the West Bank has increased since Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023.
At least 964 Palestinians have been killed ever since including East Jerusalem, according to the UN (United Nations).
The settlers have a strong influence on Israeli politics and, in the rare cases where they are arrested for violent attacks against Palestinians, are often released without accusation.
Israel are illegal according to international law.
Ofer Cassif, a leftist member of the Israeli Parliament, required authorities to begin an investigation into Hathalin’s death.
