The three -day strike called by taxi drivers of the Luanda region is the origin of the demonstrations in various zones of the capital. At the origin of the strike movement, is the increase of up to 47% of fuel prices, which the New Taxi drivers association considers inadmissible. From the equivalent of 0.19 cents of euro the liter, the fuel passes to the equivalent of 0.28 cents from euro to liter – from 200 to 300 kwanzas.

The frustration of taxi drivers, which also require that stops to drive and the creation of a professional portfolio of the sector are defined, joins that of a asphyxiated population by increasing the cost of living.

In an interview with CNN Portugal, journalist and economist Carlos Rosado de Carvalho recalled that there was a widespread increase in cost of living in Angola. “The fees increased and there is no public education, increased diesel, increased transport, increased electricity, increased water (…).”

Rosado de Carvalho recalls that this week’s strike has reinforced a social contestation movement that motivates Angolans to take to the streets for some time. “There are civil society movements that have marked demonstrations every week. At least in the last two Saturdays there have been manifestations. It is expected that these manifestations can continue in the future,” he said.

On social networks, Angolans say it is very unfair that a country that produces so much oil see increasing fuel prices. Angola is the third largest raw producer in Africa, surpassed only by Libya and Nigeria. Former member of the organization of oil producing countries, OPEC, Angola is also among the 20 largest producers in the world.
