Sad News from Bratislava: The zoo had to spend Jawa Levice, the oldest feature of the Drákula also died

The Zoo in Bratislava joined Monday (28 July) for serious health reasons to Euthanasia Levice South African named Jawa. The Levice has survived at the zoo for almost 20 years. At the same time, at the age of 20, the oldest individual of the three island’s features named Drákula died. TASR informed Zuzana Dzurdzíková from the Marketing and Education Department of the ZOO.

We have put on antibiotic treatment that brought only a temporary improvement”Said the main zoologist Róbert Kondrk, saying that due to her age, overall condition and after consultation with veterinarians and experts, they have taken the decision on euthanasia.

Left was born on July 12, 2004 in the Swiss Zoo Walter Zoo. She came to Bratislava on December 10, 2005 along with the male Haldirwith which they formed a couple. After Haldir’s death, in February 2022, she was alone in her exposure. In 2023, the zoo tried to connect with a new male from the Hodonin Zoo, However, Jawa did not accept him in her enclosure and decided to spend the rest of her life alone.

With age, there were several health complications. In 2017, she underwent a demanding surgery due to pyometra (purulent uterine inflammation), and in recent years it has also been bothered by urinary stones that required daily medication.

At the end of July, the oldest individual Rysa island died in the Bratislava Zoo. The male was born on June 5, 2005 in Tierpark Chemnitz in Germany. In 2006 he was moved to the Zoo Ostrava, where in 2012 he beaten the chicks. Together with his two sons, he was moved to the Zoo in Bratislava in May 2013.

At the end of May 2025, all individuals from the group were moved to a new and more spacious enclosure. On this occasion, they also carried out a clinical inspection at the zoo, including blood collection, the results of the examinations did not show significant health complications. The male lynx died naturally according to the zoo due to the high age. The lynx is an island in the wild for approximately 13 to 17 years, and is 20 to 24 in human care.
