In the war plagued by the Gaza Strip, the worst possible famine scenario is currently taking place. On Tuesday, the Integrated Classification of Food Safety phases (IPC), which is supported by the UN, pointed out this. According to the latest evaluation of experts, it will not be sufficient to throw help from the air to reverse the humanitarian disaster in Gaza. IPC therefore calls for immediate and unlimited approach to humanitarian aid to this Palestinian enclave, TASR reports according to the AFP report.

A group of organizations supported by the UN stated that, according to the latest data, the famine thresholds were fulfilled in most of the Gaza band, on which Israel imposed a blockade of humanitarian aid supplies, which even worsened the humanitarian crisis and the locals are threatened with starvation.

A warning against the famine

“The Gaza Strip is now developing the worst famine scenario,” warned IPC, which monitors the measurement of malnutrition and issues an internationally recognized definition of the concept of famine. Immediate and unlimited humanitarian approach to enclave is the only way to stop the rapidly increasing “hunger and death”.

IPC has issued its warning, which – as it emphasizes – has the character of alerts and not a formal famine classification, at a time when groups providing assistance is alarm in connection with the deaths caused by hunger in the Gaza Strip.

Blockages and help

Israel introduced a complete blockade of the enclave on March 2 after the negotiations on the ceasefire with the militant Hamas movement failed. At the end of May – at the time of warning of the wave of famine – then began to allow the restoration of the limited supply of aid and in Sunday announced the introduction of a tactical break in military operations. Last week, he also allowed the air to be dropped from the air. This method of providing assistance is considered dangerous and at the same time insufficient compared to land supply.

IPC pointed out that the number of deaths of young children is increasing due to hunger. From April to mid-July, more than 20,000 children were admitted to the treatment of acute malnutrition, of which 3,000 were seriously malnourished. Children under five years of age die from hunger – from 17 July they reported at least 16 such deaths.

Threatening young children

“More and more evidence shows that widespread hunger, malnutrition and diseases are the cause of hunger deaths to increase. Without immediate measures, famine and death will continue to spread quickly and inexorably,” says the statement, which is aimed to draw attention to the crisis based on the “latest evidence available” to 25 July. The initiative is also preparing another but more detailed opinion that will be published as soon as possible.
