Angolan National Police confirms the death of an officer in service

The Angolan National Police announced the death of an in-service officer on Tuesday in the province of Icolo and Bengo, and rose to 1,214 the number of detainees during the two days of stopping taxi drivers marked by.

The spokesman for the National Police, Subcommittee Mateus Rodrigues, presented to the press the situation of the last 48 hours of the taxi service stoppage in Luanda Province, marked by looting and vandalism acts, scheduled to end Wednesday.

With this death, the number of deaths already released by the National Police following these two days of protest against the rising price of fuel and public transport rates.

According to Mateus Rodrigues, the public security situation in the Angolan capital is considered stable, with some occurrences recorded on Monday, embodied in stacking acts of commercial establishments and violence.

“Today we had our forces much more attentive, much closer to the occurrences and these acts were restlessly repressed, which allowed that around 16:00 the order was practically replaced,” he said.

Mateus Rodrigues also underlined the record of some occurrences in the provinces of Huambo and Icolo and Bengo, but ensured that the situation is already controlled.

Regarding the damage, the official highlighted a vehicle of the National Police, which clashed against a wall in Viana, with slight injuries to the staff.

Throughout the night, the police will maintain security measures, in some cases intensify them, noting that the intention of the citizens involved “is only the looting of commercial establishments.”

“They use as modus operandi the placement of barricades on the roads, burned tires, to prevent circulation and later the intention is to vandalize and loot commercial establishments,” he said.

Police will intensify and reinforce the protection of commercial establishments in Luanda, Icolo and Bengo and other provinces, “to prevent registered situations from being able to take place,” he said.
