The leadership of the Liberal Party (PL) in the House of Representatives released, on Tuesday (29), an official note in support of the federal deputy, who is detained in Italy. According to the bench leader, Deputy Sostenes Cavalcante (PL-RJ), Zambelli would have voluntarily presented to the Italian authorities and began the process of request for political asylum and non-extradition to Brazil.

Zambelli is on Interpol’s Red Diffusion list after being sentenced by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) to ten years in prison. The parliamentarian was accused of involvement in the Hacker invasion of the National Council of Justice (CNJ) system and issuing a false arrest warrant against Minister Alexandre de Moraes.

In the note, Sostenes states that the deputy’s decision “is not an act of escape, but direct consequence of a country that has denied its elected representatives the right to freedom, contradictory and self -defense.” The leader of the PL bench classified the current scenario as “a state of camouflaged exception” and accused the judiciary of concentrating functions beyond those provided for by the Constitution, such as investigating, legislating and punishing.

The statement also mentions recent episodes involving other opposition parliamentarians and journalists, who, according to the note, would be censored, persecuted or silenced. “Silenced deputies. Banned journalists. Presidents under ankle.

The PL leadership also appealed to the other House’s party benches and leaders to react to the situation. “Because today is Carla Zambelli. Tomorrow, it will be any of us,” says Sostenes Cavalcante. Zambelli’s extradition will still be analyzed, and the Brazilian Federal Police have 48 hours to formalize the request with the Italian authorities. The Ministry of Justice confirmed the arrest and stated that the process takes place within the legal procedures of international cooperation.
