Severely injured Olympic champion in Pakistan accident – 07/29/2025 – Sport

The German biatlete and two-time Olympic champion Laura Dahlmeier was seriously injured after being hit by a rock drop while trying to climb a 6,094 meter peak northern Pakistan, a provincial government spokesman and a Pakistani climbing federation reported on Tuesday.

The accident occurred on Monday, when Dahlmeier was hit by a landslide in the Hushe Valley, in the northern mountain range of Gilgit-Baltista province, said spokesman Faizullah Faraq, adding that bad time prevents a helicopter from coming to the scene.

The rescue operation is underway with the cooperation of the Pakistani army, added Faraq.

The incident occurred around noon of July 28, at an altitude of approximately 5,700 meters at Pico Laila, said the Alpine Club of Pakistan, a National Federation of Mountaineering and sports climbing.

Dahlmeier, 31, was climbing with his mountaineering partner, Marina Eva, when she was hit by a sudden fall of rocks, resulting in significant injuries, the club told a statement.

Club vice president Karrar Haidri said Dahlmeier is seriously injured.

Dahlmeier retired from the sport in 2019 at the age of 25, a year after becoming the first female biatlete to win the sprint duo and persecution at the same Olympics.

The mountainous regions of the northern country have experienced strong flooding and landslides, killing several local tourists during the current monsoon period.
