USA justify the order with a “national emergency” due to “unusual” and “extraordinary” policies and actions of the Brazilian government
United States President Donald Trump signed the decree that officially imposition 50% tariffs on Brazilian products. The measure comes into force seven days after signature, ie on August 6.
Some products are out of these rates, such as pulp and orange juice, as well as some civil planes and aeronautics, some wood and oil products, fertilizers, energy products and precious metals, coal, steel and its by -products, reports Reuters. These are some of the products Brazil most exports to the US, which was preparing the productive sector and the Brazilian government. The fact that Trump indicated these exceptions was good news, reacted Rogério Ceron, secretary of the National Treasury, who assured that he is already working in a contingency plan to mitigate the measures in the most affected sectors.
In the document, it is stated that the order is justified by a “national emergency” due to “unusual” and “extraordinary” policies and actions of the Brazilian government that, according to the Republican, impair American companies, the rights of freedom of expression of US citizens and foreign policy and the economy of the country in general.
“Today, President Donald J. Trump has signed an executive order by implementing an additional 40% fare over Brazil, raising the total fare to 50%, to deal with recent policies, practices and actions of the government of Brazil that constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat to national security, foreign policy and the economy of the United States,” he reads in the document.
This order represents another climb of the White House against the government of Lula da Silva. One justification is the accusation of Jair Bolsonaro coup d’état, Donald Trump’s political ally.
“Political persecution, intimidation, harassment, censorship and legal proceedings against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and thousands of his supporters constitute serious abuses of human rights that undermined the rule of law in Brazil,” said the White House.
USA apply magnitsky law against Alexandre de Moraes
The United States today imposed the magnitsky law to the Judge of the Federal Supreme Court of Brazil, a device that imposes economic sanctions for serious violations against human rights or corruption.
The sanctions announced today block the possible assets and properties of Alexandre de Moraes in the United States and prohibit US citizens to perform any transaction with him. The sanction is therefore considered a kind of “financial death penalty.”
“Alexandre de Moraes assumed for himself the role of judge and jury in an illegal witches against citizens and companies in the United States and Brazil,” said in a statement, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, referring to the accusation of attempted coup by former President Jair Bolsonaro and the battle of the judge against misinformation on the ‘Big Techs’ platforms.
This decision represents another climb of the trade and diplomatic war began by the government of Donald Trump against the Lula da Silva government, two days from the 50% tariffs imposed by the United States on Brazil.
“Moraes is responsible for an oppressive campaign of censorship, arbitrary arrests that violate human rights and judicialized proceedings with political motivation, including former President Jair Bolsonaro,” reads in the same note, in reference to the process against the ‘scholarship’ hard core about the planning of a coup, but also to the processes against radicals that on January 08, 2023 invaded and attacked the three powers in sedes Brasilia.
The measure announced today represents a new pressure from Donald Trump’s administration, which on July 18 had already revoked the judge’s visa and forbidden his entry into US territory.
