SAO PAULO, SP (Folhapress) – President Trump signed a decree that implements an additional 40% tariff over Brazil, raising the total rate of the rate to 50%, the White House said in a statement.
The measure aims to “deal with the recent policies, practices and actions of the Brazilian government that constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat to national security, foreign policy and the economy of the United States,” says the statement about the signing of the decree.
The measure had been announced by US President Donald Trump on July 9. It is the largest rate among those announced to countries that export to the country.
According to Trump, the surcharge is imposed in part due to the “insidious attacks of Brazil on free elections and the fundamental rights of freedom of expression of Americans.”
Products imported by the US in Brazil will be overcoat at 50%. That is, in addition to import rates already charged, there will be 50% charge from August 1.
An example is the case of ethanol, according to interlocutors. Americans imposed a 2.5% rate on the product, raised to 12.5% after 10% surcharge. With the new announcement, the percentage rises to 52.5% in August.
