USA and Japan issue tsunami alert after earthquake in Russia

The United States and Japan issued tsunami alerts after a magnitude 8.8 earthquake reached the east coast of Russia on Tuesday (29).

According to the Geophysical service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, “Significant and noticeable secondary tremors are expected to be, with magnitudes of up to 7.5, they continue for at least another month.”

United States President Donald Trump has commented on the tremor on social networks. He said a tsunami alert is in force in the regions of Hawaii, Alaska, US coast and Japan.

According to Japan’s chief secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi, citizens in the areas covered by the tsunami warning should be removed “immediately” to a safe place. “We are receiving reports and monitoring any details about damage or victims,” said Hayashi.

According to the regional governor of Russia, the tremor was the “strongest in decades”.

Hawaií issued alerts to a possible tsunami requested the removal of the population from regions at risk.

Southeast Asia

Philippines and Indonesia also issued tsunami alerts after seismic shaking.

Some coastal areas in the Pacific Ocean Philippines should suffer waves of tsunami less than 1 meter (3.3 feet) high, said the Filipino Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivols) in a communication.

Tsunami’s first waves are expected to arrive between 1:20 pm and 2:40 pm local time on Wednesday, based on the institute’s projections.
