Presidents of both countries had a “very good” phone call
Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Thursday that she came to an understanding with US President Donald Trump to suspend the expected increase in rates that came into force on Friday. The agreement guarantees a 90 -day break in new commercial measures, allowing both countries to resume negotiations with a view to a new commercial understanding.
Sheinbaum guarantees that the telephone conversation with Trump was “very good” and resulted in the immediate suspension of additional rates, which included increases on cars, steel, aluminum, copper and fentanyl. On the other hand, Mexico pledged to eliminate non-tariff trade barriers that the US finds harmful to the balance of bilateral trade.
We had a very good call with the president of the United States, Donald Trump. We avoid the increase in tariffs announced tomorrow and achieve 90 days to build a long -term agreement from dialogue.

Donald Trump confirmed the deal in a publication on his social network, Truth Social, stressing that currently applied tariffs – including 25% on cars and 50% of metals – remain in force during the trading period. He also added that the US is willing to adopt additional measures to ensure that a new agreement reflects US interests and contributes to locking the entry of illegal substances such as Fentanil.
The current understanding, albeit temporary, arises at a time of increasing commercial tension between the two countries, despite the current agreement between the US, Mexico and Canada (USMCA). Dialogue extensions for another 90 days may allow the current terms to be adjusted or even the renegotiation of a new commercial pact if both parties reach a consensus.
