Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Wednesday that Canada intends to recognize the Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September. However, it has conditions. TASR reports on this based on Reuters and AFP reports.

The planned step is conditioned by the commitments of the Palestinian self -government, including the fundamental reform of the public administration and the election of elections until 2026, in which the Palestinian militant Hamas movement will not be able to play any role. Carney has described a dramatic change in politics as necessary if a solution in the form of two states is to maintain real hope.

Canada is among the fifteen Western countries that called on the rest of the world on Tuesday evening to recognize the Palestinian state. The joint call of the countries came at the end of the international conference organized by French and Saudi Arabia on the solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in New York.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced last Thursday that Paris will officially recognize the existence of the Palestinian State at the UN General Assembly in September. Such a step was then announced on Monday by Britain if Israel does not approach a ceasefire with the militant Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip as well as Malta.

These countries will potentially join Spain, Ireland, Slovenia and Norway, which were recognized by Palestine in May and June last year.

In its establishment in 1993, the Slovak Republic legally received the recognition of the Palestinian State from the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic.

Israel criticizes the step

Israel condemned the plan of Canada on Wednesday to recognize the Palestinian State during the UN General General Assembly and described Prime Minister Mark Carney’s statement as part of a “twisted campaign”. This is reported by TASR based on AFP report.

The Israeli Embassy in Ottawa said in its statement that “recognition of the Palestinian State in a situation where there is no responsible government, functioning institutions or good -natured leadership, rewards and legitimizes the barbaric atrocities (Palestinian movement) Hamas of 7 October 2023”. He claims that the change in the attitude of Canada is disturbed by the efforts of the ceasefire and the release of hostages.

The announcements of some closest allies of Israel reflect the growing international indignation over the menacing humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
