Minister Gilmar Mendes of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) declared support to colleague Alexandre de Moraes after he suffered sanctions from the United States.
On the afternoon of Wednesday (30), the US government announced the application of the magnitsky law against Moraes.
“Given the unjust attacks, I declare full support to Minister Alexandre de Moraes,” said the Supreme Dean.
For Gilmar, the magistrate has provided “fundamental service for the preservation of our democracy” by reporting “processes involving serious accusations, such as a plan to kill judges and political opponents and the attempt to subversion of election outcome.”
According to the dean, the independence of the Brazilian judiciary “is an unenforceable value” and the court “will continue to fulfill its functions”.
Tonight, Gilmar was at a meeting alongside ministers Luis Roberto Barroso, president of the Court, and Cristiano Zanin with executive head Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) to discuss the sanctions.
The meeting took place at the Planalto Palace shortly after the court was released A note of solidarity to Moraes. In the demonstration, the Supreme said he will not divert the role of fulfilling the Federal Constitution.

Given the unjust attacks, I declare full support to Minister Alexandre de Moraes. By leading with courage and disassessing the role of rapporteur of cases involving serious accusations, such as a plan to kill political judges and opponents and the attempt to subversion of the election outcome, Minister Alexander has rendered fundamental service to the preservation of our democracy. Regarding today’s events, it is important to say: the independence of the Brazilian judiciary is a non -negotiable value, and the Federal Supreme Court will continue to fulfill its duties.
