One of the main releases of 2024, “Gladiator 2”, entered the catalog of Netflix. The first movie is also available in the streaming service.
The production is set 16 years after the events of the first movie, in which Maximus (Russell Crowe), a powerful Roman general, arouses the wrath of Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris), Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), before the emperor’s death. When the heir sees power, he is sentenced to death, however, he can escape and starts to hide as a slave and gladiator while he goes after revenge.
The new plot is focused on Lucius, son of Lucilla and Commodus nephew, who was inspired by Maximus. In the first movie, the character is a child, played by Spencer Treat Clark. Now, Paul Mescal (“Normal People” and “Aftersun”) gives life to the protagonist.
When he was still young, Lucila sent him to a region called Numidia, on the North Africa coast. Older Life lives as a barbarian until the conquerors of his homeland invade his new home under the leadership of a Roman general. He becomes a prisoner of war and is bought by a mercenary, being forced to fight at the Colosseum and become a gladiator.
In addition to Mescal, names like (“Training Day”), (“The Last of Us”), (“Stranger Things”) and Connie Nielsenwhich returns to the second, makes up the cast.
