US Democratic Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Tim Kaine, Chuck Schumer and Ron Wyden announced on Thursday, 31, intent on presenting a “privileged legislation” to challenge the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump for Brazilian imports, according to a joint statement. The maneuver may force priority to the agenda in the voting line in the house.

“In an executive order issued yesterday, Trump invoked the Law of International Emergency Economic Powers (IEEPA) to impose tariffs. Any senator can challenge the use of YEEPA with a privileged resolution, such as the lawmakers will present. This means that the Senate will be forced to vote for legislation,” he explains.

In the text, senators cite that the 50% rate against Brazil will increase costs for Americans in basic home products, hinder the economies of both countries and can bring Brazil closer to China.

“President Trump has no interest in reducing costs for the American people. If he had not imposing tariffs and starting meaningless commercial wars,” he points out. “That’s why we will present legislation to challenge these reckless tariffs against Brazil,” he adds.

According to the note, the Democrats indicate that the republican’s action is “in response to the measures Brazil is taking to hold Trump’s friend and former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro for trying a blow,” they classify as “violent.”
