The Minister of Foreign Affairs, gathered last Wednesday (30) in Washington, with the Secretary of State for Marco Rubio. This was the first meeting between the heads of Brazilian and American diplomacy. Vieira was oriented by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to reinforce that Brazil wanted to discuss the tariff issue-and only the economic-commercial relationship-without going into political issues. The dialogue occurred on the same day as the government He announced sanctions to the Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes and the 50% tariff of exports in Brazil.
At the meeting with Rubio, Vieira said she emphasized that “the interference in national sovereignty is unacceptable and disregard for decisions of the judiciary of Brazil.” The minister said he approached the criminal action against former President Jair Bolsonaro, which Trump classifies as “witch hunt” and wants to be closed. Vieira replied that national justice is as “independent” as the US and “will not bow to external pressures.” In a later statement at the Brazilian Embassy in Washington, he said he told Rubio that the Brazilian government reserves the right to respond to US restriction measures against Moraes.
The chancellor returns to the country tonight and will report the content of the conversation to Lula in order to discuss government measures against the White House tariff, and the restrictions applied by the state department and the US treasury. According to interlocutors of the Brazilian government, Vieira moved to Washington to be received by Rubio, after days of discreet articulation. The meeting did not take place at the headquarters of the State Department, nor at the Brazilian Embassy. The place was not informed. The meeting was also not previously disclosed until it was held in the respective public agendas of both. Vieira had traveled to the United States after signaling willingness to a conversation.
