President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva declared on Wednesday (30) as a “day of sovereignty” to Brazil after the decree of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, increasing the rates on Brazilian products to 50%, and the imposition of sanctions to the Supreme Court Minister (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, based on magnitsky law.

“I will meet there to defend another sovereignty. The sovereignty of the Brazilian people due to the measures announced by the president of the United States,” said Lula, according to the newspaper O Globo.

During the sanction ceremony of a law prohibiting cosmetic tests on animals, Lula announced that he would call on Wednesday a meeting at the Planalto Palace to discuss American measures and reinforce the defense of national interests.

The meeting must be attended by the Esplanade’s key ministers, such as Foreign Affairs, Justice and Attorney General of the Union.

The executive order signed by US President Donald Trump postponed in one week the entry into force of additional tariffs, which were initially scheduled for August 1. The decree, however, provides for almost 700 exceptions, preserving important sectors of the Brazilian economy, such as the aeronautical industry, agricultural and mineral products.

In addition to the tariff increase, the US government has applied the magnitsky law against Minister Alexandre de Moraes, a measure that allows administrative sanctions without the need for judicial process, including blocking goods and restrictions on the United States. This action intensified the diplomatic tension between the two countries.
