The NGOs Human Rights Watch and International Transparency reported notes in repudiation of the government’s decision to frame the minister of (Supreme Federal Court) in Magnitsky Law.
American law was created for and other cases of foreigners involved in crimes related to.
Trump announced to Moraes on Wednesday (30). The president also cited the minister, in his justification to apply, as an “unusual and extraordinary threat to national security, foreign policy and the economy of the” alleged persecution of the former president (PL).
“Sanctions against a Federal Supreme Court minister and the Trump government’s rates on Brazil are a clear violation of judicial independence, pillar of democracy,” says Human Rights Watch on social network. “If they disagree with a decision, they should appeal, do not impose punishments on the ministers and the country,” adds the NGO, aimed at promoting human rights.
International transparency, aimed at combating corruption, states in a statement that the Trump administration makes selective use of the law by framing Moraes and not other leaders reported by human rights violations, such as El Salvador President Nayib Bukele.
“This double standard reveals the instrumentalization of human rights discourse for geopolitical purposes, undermining its own principles that magnitsky law claims to defend. Selective application further weakens the credibility of the global sanctions regime and reinforces concerns that it is being used as a tool for political convenience, not principles -based liability,” he says in the text.
International transparency also accuses the US government of political interference in another country.
“International Transparency – Brazil has made recurring criticism of the Supreme Court, both by widespread impunity in cases of corruption and increasingly normal abuse. These concerns should not be ignored, as they represent a real threat to Brazilian democracy. However, none justifies the interference of a foreign government that disrespects fundamental principles of law, such as national sovereignty and the separation of powers,” he says.
