Our democracy in Trump’s target – 07/30/2025 – Maria Hermínia Tavares

A is on the rise, found the correspondent in Brazil. Studenting it was the response of the rulers of countries against which or use force to demand domestic decisions, as did with Canada, Mexico, Panama, Colombia and Brazil.

Here, government and civil society organizations embraced the defense of sovereignty – in the presidential discourse; in official political communication; in manifestations such as the one that has eigned entities representing numerous sectors; and the enthusiastic public that filled the Faculty of Law of USP, on the morning of 25/7.

Over time, the US president added other “reasons” such as the Pix; the intention to hold the criminal acts responsible for social networks; American interest in critical minerals to impose an unprecedented tariff for all national products. But the occupant’s main motivation was clear from the beginning: investing against Brazilian justice in retaliation to the fact that the former president is accused of crimes against democracy and the rule of law.

Unsure, the affront to the independence of the national state aims to assault the democratic system in Brazil. This, in the recent past, showed strength and resilience in the face of the former president’s repeated attacks against the electoral institutions and the result of the polls, conspiring to fulminate him with a coup d’état.

Trump’s gesture, though abominable, has logic and purpose: to destroy the representative system and give our strength to those who conspire here and around the world. As the writer noted in her last book, published in Brazil as “SA Autocracy”, nowadays authoritarian governments work together to keep in power and promote globally their domination systems.

It is always good to remember that sovereignty is not an absolute value, which would make any external pressure illegitimate. Nor are their limits clear in real life. Its defense, here and now, has served to preserve the democracy of the obscurantist alliance among right -wing extremists from outside and outside the country. But it was often used as a shield by governments that pursue opponents and use the strength to limit the freedom of their citizens.

Taken to the letter, respect for the principle of sovereignty would not allow sanctions imposed on South Africa at the time of apartheid; or to Venezuela, who forged election results and pursuing opponents; Nor would justify the pressures of then -US president Jimmy Carter about the Brazilian military government for the end of torture to opponents in the 1970s; or the discreet-and welcome-government management to remind the high military levels the costs involved in Bolsonaro’s coup adventure.

Today, sovereignty is on the rise in the country, allowing in its name to join Brazilians of different political affinities, isolating the allied radical right. But if the collapse of democracy is the target of extremists of various nationalities, their defense may at some point demand the support and pressure of external allies.
