Syria is looking for Moscow’s support even after the fall of Bashar Assad’s regime. The Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Šajbání calls for a partnership based on mutual respect and sovereignty of Syria.

Syria wants to have Russia by its side, Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Shajbani said on Thursday during a visit to Moscow. At the same time, Syrian diplomacy chief called for mutual respect between Syria and Russia after the overthrow of the long -time Syrian President Bashar Assad supported by Moscow. According to the AFP report, TASR reports this.

Shajbania: Relationships should be based on mutual respect

“The current period is full of various challenges and threats, but it is also the opportunity to build a uniform and strong Syria. And, of course, we are interested in Russia during this trip to our side,” said Šajbání. However, according to the Syrian Minister, there are a number of factors that complicate these relationships in practice. According to him, relationships should be based on mutual respect.

Šajbání also noted that Damascus will “perceive all countries as” the same “and build relations with them in respecting Sovereign Syria, the Russian news agency TASS reports. “We have heard that Moscow has supported our attitude, and we are glad that the relations between Russia and Syria will take an excellent direction in the near future,” the Syrian minister added.

It is questionable whether Russia will be able to leave its bases in Syria

According to AFP, it is not clear whether the new government led by Islamists will allow Russia to keep its bases on Syrian territory. During the Civil War in Syria, which broke out in 2011, Russia participated in this conflict with raids in the forces fighting against Assad’s regime. The Assad family, which has ruled in Syria for more than 50 years, allowed the Kremlin to build a naval base near the coastal town of Tartús and the Humajmi Aeronautics in Lazikia’s province. It is the only official military base of Russia outside the territory of the former Soviet Union.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russia is ready to provide Syrians to all possible help in restoring the country after the end of the civil war. “We have agreed to continue the dialogue on these issues,” said the Russian Minister, writes AP.
