Two siblings from Britain at the age of 11 and 13 drowned on the beach of Llarg near Tarragona in the northeast of Spain. Their father, who tried to help them, were pulled out of the water unconscious. The tragedy was reported on Wednesday by the local authorities, TASR writes based on DPA and Reuters reports.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening. At the time of the disaster, a yellow warning flag highlighted on the stormy sea, which calls on swimmers to caution, was posted on the favorite, mostly sandy beach.
Police, health professionals and firefighters intervened on the spot. The family of the victim was provided by psychologists. According to local media, children withdrew strong currents into the sea. Although they gave them immediate help after pulling out, they could not be saved. Their father was unconscious from the water and is now in the hospital.
Since mid -June, when the summer holiday season has officially started in Catalonia, 16 people have lost their lives – five more than in the same period last year. Last year, more than 700 people drowned in Spain in pools and sea, which was the most in the last decade.
