This name bears over 1000 Polish women. Officials oppose it

Officials can stand in our way if we want to call the daughter of Inka. Many of them consider this name to be a diminutive form of Inez or Ina, and in accordance with art. 59. Act on marital status files, it is prohibited to give diminutive names that are considered unofficial. However, you can refer to the position of the Polish Language Council.

Inka is a very rare name. According to data from the PESEL register, 1049 women wore them in 2024. In turn, only 38 girls were named in the same year. In 2023, 57 Intek was born, which shows a decrease in the popularity of this name. Perhaps this is associated with refusals of officials.

Researchers do not agree on the origin of this rare name. Some say that they come from Germanic from the names of Ingorg or Ingryd. Still others attribute to him Polish roots and relationship with names, i.e. Alina, Irmina.

As mentioned, many officials consider them a diminutive of Inez or Iny. There are also those who reject conclusions due to the association with the popular coffee from the PRL, which means that the child can be exposed to ridicule.

Parents wanting to name Inka to their daughter decided to ask the Polish language advice about them. As it turns out, the position of linguists has changed over the years.

In 1998, prof. Walery Pisarek believed that no civil office should allow the child to be given this name because they are considered a diminutive.

Currently, linguists are more liberal in relation to this name. According to dr hab. Katarzyna Kłosińska, prof. UW, Inka can be treated as a diminutive form and an independent name. Therefore, it can be entered in the marital status file.

Officials interpret this name differently. One of the mothers decided to share her experience with the name of Inka. She wanted to call her daughter like that, but in the office they did not agree to it, which gave the child the name ina. Some time later, the same institution agreed to accept her “diminutive” form.

So if you want to call the daughter of Inka, then it is worth citing the words of Dr. hab., Prof. UW Katarzyna Kłosińska. Then officials can “go on our hand”. After all, giving the child a dream name is not only a formality – we consider it an important choice that affects the identity and a sense of uniqueness throughout life.
