André Corrêa do Lago says that the daily rates are up to 10 times above normal; Brazilian law does not allow imposing limits on prices
The president of (United Nations Conference on Climate Change), André Corrêa do Lago, said on Thursday (31.Jul.2025) that countries officially asked for the conference to be held in Belém. The reason is the daily prices in hotels in the capital of Para.
“Countries have actually expressed public to say that the price of hotel price is a concern. Representatives of regions asked to get the COP from Belém”he said. The statement was made at an event of the (United Nations Climate Change Organization). The meeting brought together representatives of the Climate Convention, the Federal Governments and the State of Pará, in addition to the bodies responsible for the organization of the conference.
The diplomat said that while in other editions of COP the hotels charged twice or triple the usual value in Belém, the daily rates are up to 10 times above normal. He pointed out that Brazilian law does not allow to impose limits on daily prices and what remains is dialogue with the hotel chain.
Priority countries include less developed nations such as Ethiopia, Haiti, Maldives and Nepal. Also participating China, India, European Union and other active role delegations in climate negotiations.
Despite the logistical effort, the high cost of daily workers worries leaders of developing countries.
“There is, in fact, a revolt with this insensitivity, especially by developing countries – the lower relative degree of development – due to the abusive prices being charged”said Corrêa do Lago.
