El Salvador approves project that allows “endless reelection”

Proposal expands presidential mandate to 6 years and eliminates the need for 2nd round; Bukele was reelected in 2024

The Legislative Assembly of El Salvador on Thursday (31.Jul.2025) a proposal that allows to reformulate how the elections are held in the country, paving the way for the current president, (new ideas, right), fulfills another term. The measure had broad support from the Bukele party.

The bill, which reform the Constitution, provides for the possibility of presidential reelection indefinitely, the increase in the presidential mandate from 5 to 6 years and the end of the need for the 2nd shift in the elections. The constitutional amendment was approved by 57 votes to 3.

Bukele was reelected and his second term would end in 2029. However, with the reform, the presidential elections will coincide with the legislatures and municipal. The next election must be held in 2027.

“It’s quite simple, El Salvador: Only you will have the power to decide how long you want to support the work of any civil servant, including its president”said deputy Ana Figueroa (new ideas), member of the party that proposed the bill for constitutional changes, cited by the agency. “You have the power to decide how long you support your president and all the elected employees ”he declared.

According to Reutersthe few members of the Legislative Assembly who do not belong to the Government Party opposed the proposal because they fear that it would consolidate the single party regime in the country.

“Democracy died today in El Salvador”said Mrs Marcela Villatoro of the opposition Arena (Nationalist Republican Alliance).
