Although contemporary cuisine offers us a lot of delicacies, often seen in other countries, the fashion for reaching for dishes straight from the kitchen of our grandmothers returns. Rice with apples is like a memory of childhoodthis taste can not only saturate, but also move. When I make it, I have my grandmother bustling after a small kitchen, preparing this aromatic dish. We eagerly eaten for breakfast or afternoon tea.
During the PRL, cooking looked different than today, when we have so many ingredients at our fingertips. Then the ability to conjure up something delicious from … nothing. Store shelves were empty, but people coped in different ways, for example, breeding fruits and vegetables in their own gardens or buying them from the hosts.
A good example of a dish from the PRL is just Rice with apples. Cheap, filling, it could be done properly all year round. And for this, this simplicity of ingredients – the only thing the housewives needed is milk, rice, some sugar, cinnamon and apple.
Despite modesty, Rice with apples in the PRL was a delicacywhich especially the kids loved.

List of ingredients:
Apple mass:
- 2 kg of apples,
- 1 tablespoon of butter,
- 2 tablespoons of fine sugar,
- 1 vanilla sugar,
- 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon.
Rice mass:
- 300 g of rice,
- 2 cups of milk,
- 2 cups of water,
- 2 tablespoons of butter,
- 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon,
- 1 vanilla sugar,
- 4 tablespoons of fine sugar.
Additionally:
- 1 packet of vanilla sugar,
- 1 tablespoon of butter.
Boil milk and water.
When it boils, throw rice, butter, sugars and cinnamon into the pot. Cook on medium heat for 15-20 minutes, after this time, strain and cool.
Peel the apples, wash, grate on a thick grater.
Melt butter in a pot, add grated apples, sugars, cinnamon.
Simmer on low heat under cover for about 15 minutes, stirring from time to time.
Grease the heat -resistant dish with butter, transfer half of the rice to it. Put the apples on this layer, then another layer of rice. Align everything with a spoon, sprinkle the top with vanilla sugar.
Set the oven to 180 degrees, bake for about 20 minutes (up – down).
Sprinkle with cinnamon before serving.
This inconspicuous treat, which was very popular years ago, returns to favor. We mean here Rice with apples on milk in a new version, i.e. Comfort Food. What does this mean? Comfort food is a food that makes us feel good and safe, comfortable. Like in a family home.
