The US claims that Canada is failing to fight the smuggling of fentanyl, which Ottawa rejects.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said disappointment after the White House announced on Thursday that goods imported to the US from Canada will be subject to 35 percent duties instead of 25 percent. According to Reuters report, TASR reports this.

American duties will significantly affect the Canadian industry with wood, steel, aluminum and cars, Carney said in a social network contribution X. At the same time, he announced the introduction of Canadian job protection measures, the purchase of Canadian goods, investment in industrial competitiveness and diversification of export markets.

Reasons for duties

Higher duties Washington justified, among other things, by claiming that Canada failed to fight Fentanyl’s smuggling to the US, although according to Carney of Canada, only one percent of the total import of this drug into the United States comes and Canada is working intensively to reduce its volumes.

At the same time, US President Donald Trump signed a executive regulation on Thursday to introduce new duties to dozens of other US business partners. According to the White House, an exception to Canadian and Mexican goods enters the country under the North American trade agreement (Cusma) remains in force. The measures will come into force by six days.

Impacts on global trade

So far, Washington has announced business agreements with Britain, Vietnam, Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, South Korea and the European Union. However, the details of these agreements remained unclear. The global economy is also influenced by the unresolved trade dispute between the United States and China.

Since his return to the White House in January, Trump has introduced duties that shook global shops and hit dozens of countries around the world hard, recalls Reuters.
