TSE President did not directly cite the case of Trump government sanctions to the STF minister, but throughout his speech, he highlighted the ‘sovereignty of the laws of Brazil’
The president of the Minister Superior Electoral Court said that the minister, former president of the Court, will always be remembered for his performance in the 2022 elections, “at a time that still reverberates the extreme difficulty in which he acted and continues to act as Minister of the Supreme Court, with the rigors of the law.”
In the resumption of the work of the Electoral Justice, after the July recess, the minister began the session with a protocol speech, mentioning the preparation for the next election. “This electoral justice continues to work in the terms of the law in force in Brazil, with tranquility, ethics, impartiality and independence, now in a much more objective way, focusing on the elections of 2026,” he said.
Cármen Lúcia did not directly cite the case of the sanctions of the government of the minister Alexandre de Moraes, but, throughout his speech, highlighted the “sovereignty of the laws of Brazil”, with a brief mention of the colleague Minister of the Supreme Court:
“This electoral justice continues to do its duty: to observe and apply the Constitution of Brazil, the laws of the Brazilian Republic, as the magistrates who preceded us in these chairs. Here I make a special emphasis to those who succeed in the presidency, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, whose role in history will always be remembered, especially in the 2022 elections.”
The TSE is composed of three STF ministers, two of the Superior Court of Justice and two lawyers. In addition to Carmen Lúcia, the Supreme Ministers Kassio Nunes Marques, vice president of the Court, and André Mendonça-nominated by former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), represent the Supreme Court.
Soon after the initial speech, the ministers Floriano de Azevedo Marques and Estela Aranha was held, who assumed the vacancies for law.
