The Federal Deputy (-SP) filed on Friday (1st) a letter with the CNE (National Council of) requesting the national regulation of trans and transvestites in Brazilian higher education.
The election arises in response to the increase in court decisions that question the continuity of affirmative policies implemented by public universities, such as the (Federal University of Rio Grande), which can lead to the cancellation of enrollment made between 2023 and 2025.
The parliamentarian requests that the CNE will develop a normative resolution that establishes national guidelines for the adoption of trans quotes; May the process be public and participative, with direct involvement of social organizations and that there is articulation between the different levels of teaching on gender diversity.
It also asks the CNE urgently issues a technical note in defense of FURG and all universities that adopted trans quotas to legally subsidize the institutions.
In the document, Hilton mentions the growing legal insecurity that reaches these policies in the absence of specific federal guideline. Currently, 23 public universities already adopt trans quotas, but, says the deputy, judicial and administrative offensives threaten their continuity.
The parliamentarian states that only 0.3% of the trans and transvestite population accesses higher education and that the life expectancy of this population is around 35 years in Brazil.
“This regulation is fundamental to guarantee legal certainty, safeguard university autonomy and consolidating the right of transgender people to education. It is not an isolated identity agenda, it is a concrete response to the brutal inequalities we keep facing. And this is the duty of the Brazilian state,” says Hilton.
