A group of Brazilian parliamentarians sent on Friday (1st) a letter to the House and US Foreign Affairs committees and the US Senate in reaction to the intensification of commercial disputes between the two countries.
The document was signed by Senators (PSD-MA) and (-PE) and federal deputies Henrique Vieira (PSOL-RJ) and Rogerio Correia (PT-MG).
US President Donald Trump, reaching meat, coffee, fish and fruits.
In addition, the US government in six areas, including digital commerce, preferred tariffs, intellectual property and deforestation. The US President justifies measures as a response to alleged threats to US economy and national security.
Parliamentarians argue that Brazil has maintained commercial deficit with the US since 2009, accumulating US $ 410 billion in 15 years. “Brazil, by the way, is one of the few major economies in the world that provides significant surpluses for the US,” the document says.
Regarding the accusations related to the control of digital platforms, the signatories argue that Brazilian judicial decisions “are strictly guided in the dictates of the Federal Constitution of Brazil and the laws that standardize these topics in Brazilian territory.”
They also criticize the assumption that “American laws have to override Brazilian laws”.
The letter characterizes the PIX – seated in American commercial investigation as a possible unfair practice of the country in relation to electronic payments – such as “an agile, cheap and secure tool, widely used by the Brazilian population, especially by the popular strata” and “promotes financial inclusion and innovation in the banking system.”
Signatories ask US congressmen to “defend democracy, their fundamental values and the common heritage of bicy-bilateral Brazil-anda bilateral relations.”
In addition to the commissions, the letter was sent to deputies Jamie Raskin, Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Delia Ramirez, Chuy Garcia, Greg Marry, Jonathan Jackson and Raul Grijalva, and Senator Bernie Sanders.
The initiative was brokered by the Vladimir Herzog Institute. The organization also issued a note on Friday in support of the Supreme Court Minister (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, the target of economic sanctions by the Trump government through global law magnitsky.
“The sanction imposed by the United States goes beyond the limits of diplomacy and resumes interventionist practices that marked dark moments of Latin American history, as in 1964, when the US government supported the destabilization of democracy in Brazil. This kind of external interference should be repudiated vehemently,” the note says.
