It was not even born the only time a Brazilian was champion of Cincinnati’s Master 1000, his next tournament, which starts on August 7. The year was 2001 and at the time, the then world ranking leader Gustavo Kuerten won the title, defeating Australian Patrick Rafter in the decision.

24 years ago, until reaching the final, the three -time champion of Roland Garros won no less than six rivals: the host Andy Roddick, German Tommy Haas, Croatian Goran Ivanisevic, Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov, and Briton Tim Henman.

That was the fourth participation of the Brazilian idol in the American tournament. Until then, Guga’s best campaign was to have reached the semifinals of the previous edition, when the tormentor was Henman.

In all, the ex-Number 1 in the world played seven editions of the American Masters 1000, with 16 wins, in 22 matches. Guga’s debut was in 1997, the year of the first of his three Roland Garros titles, when he reached the quarterfinals on American soil. That week, Santa Catarina debuted defeating none other than host Andre Agassi, but was eliminated, three games later, from another American: Michael Chang.

Guga’s second participation in Cincinnati, another duel against Agassi in 1999. The American, this time, won the best.
