Acai is one of the latest consumer trends in Portugal, with stores opening in several cities and the interest to grow, especially in the summer months. This superfood originating from the Amazon is usually served cold, accompanied by other fruits, cereals or sweet coverage.
Paula has been in Portugal for seven years and decided to open an acai store in Lisbon after a successful Seville experience. For her, the business also has an emotional value:
“Acai is a product of my land, I think then I already identify, I feel at home. Serve something like I had to receive people in my house.”
The entrepreneur believes that the phenomenon is far from being a passenger: “Acai is something that is getting very famous, globally, in Portugal”underlines.

In origin, however, the consumption is quite different. The acai berry is born of a typical palm tree of the Amazon region and its purple fruits, similar to small berries, are served hot and with salty side dishes such as fried fish or cassava.
In recent years, acai has become a global trend. In Portugal, although the intense purple color keeps, the local taste prefers the sweetness of summer – cold, fruity and ready to eat to the spoon.
