Do you fertilize the lawn? The gardener grabs his head and talks about the consequences

By cultivating the garden, we try to avoid chemistry. We do not want to poke ourselves, loved ones and pets. That is why we are happy to reach for organic fertilizers, which often arise in the spirit of zero waste. This is not a good idea for all plants. How to fertilize the lawn so as not to harm him?

We have heard many times that coffee grounds are a great fertilizer for plants. By the way, they cost us nothing, they are simply waste after preparing a small black one. However, the lawn fertilization with coffee coffee is a bad idea. Although they contain nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, these are not quantities that will eat the blades sufficiently. An experienced gardener also pointed out that the grass likes slightly acidic soil reaction with a pH of 5.5-6.5. Coffee coffee grounds are acidifyingand if the reaction of the substrate falls significantly, weeds and moss will prevail on the lawn.

Coffee coffee grounds spilled directly onto the lawn can begin to moldand this is the first step to infection with fungal diseases. If you pour them in one place, coffee leftovers will create a shell, which will make it difficult to access water, refine and air. So instead of pouring them on the lawn, throw them into the compost. There they will be much more useful. You can also use them to fertilize acidophilic plants, such as hydrangeas or blueberries. First, however, dry them thoroughly, and then mix with the top layer of soil under the plants.

To make the lawn thick, green and resistant to diseases, it should be fertilized with preparations containing nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). It is mineral fertilizers widely available in stores. Nitrogen stimulates grass growth and gives it an intense color, phosphorus supports the development of roots, and potassium strengthens drought resistance and diseases. In spring, it is worth reaching for fertilizers with more nitrogen, while in the summer and autumn for a mixture with a reduced content of this element, but richer in potassium and phosphorus. This will help strengthen the grass from frosts.

Fertilizers can have the form of a granules that falls evenly on the lawn (preferably with a seeder) or a fluid diluted with water. It is important to fertilize the lawn according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, preferably after mowing the grass and before the planned rain or watering. Thanks to this, the ingredients will penetrate the soil faster and will not burden the blades. It’s best to fertilize the lawn two to three times a season. The first fertilization must be done in early spring, after the first mowing. The second is time in June, and the last should be done no later than at the beginning of September.
