Politician reacted on social networks to the precautionary measures imposed by Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court (STF), Senator Marcos do Val (Somos). Lula government opponents discuss the possibility of overthrowing the magistrate’s decision in plenary, while governors say the measures show “justice against those who try to sabotage democracy.”
The senator was received at the Brasilia airport by the Federal Police (PF) on the morning of Monday, 4, 11 days after announcing that he traveled to the United States without communicating to the authorities. From now on, Val will wear an electronic anklet and must comply with nighttime.
Val had a passport seized by Moraes determination in August last year. The senator is investigated for allegedly integrating a group that promoted attacks on PF agents who work in STF inquiries and try to architect a plan to nullify the 2022 elections.

Senator and former vice-president in the management of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Hamilton Mourão (Republicans-RS) called the measures “humiliating and restrictive of freedom”, stating that they are unjustified.
“I understand that, as soon as the Senate is formally notified by the Supreme Court on the measures imposed, it is urgent to request that the maximum collegiate delibere about the relaxation or maintenance of the aforementioned restrictive measures of freedom, which are equivalent to arrest in the act, as preceded by this House,” said the senator.

Mourão cited the precedent applied in the case of the then senator, today federal deputy Aécio Neves (PSDB-MG), denounced by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) in May 2017 for the crime of passive corruption and embarrassment to investigations, involving bribe case passed by J&F. The deputy was acquitted in July 2023.
In October of that year, after friction between the powers, the plenary decided that it is up to the judiciary to apply precautionary measures to parliamentarians, but, in case of direct or indirect removal of the position, it is necessary to endorse the congress. Val was not removed from office.
Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) also defended the plenary colleague, stating that Val can count on him to “overthrow the arbitrariness in the Senate plenary immediately.”

“‘It will have a tragic end,’ said Marcos do Val about Moraes. The end that came was another: electronic anklet in the foot. It’s not persecution. It’s justice against those who try to sabotage democracy,” said Embratur president Marcelo Freixo (PT).
Freixo referred to the phrase said by Val in August last year, when the senator failed to determine Moraes not to use social networks, the same decision that seized his passport.

Federal Deputy Erika Hilton (PSOL-SP) compared the measure imposed on the senator with those applied to Bolsonaro on the 18th.
The former president also started to wear anklet and has time to be at home during the week. He is investigated in the inquiry that targets his son, federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), who operates in the United States against Brazil to see his father’s free father.
